There are lots of fantastic environmental events happening locally every week including talks, walks and ad-hoc volunteering on conservation work parties/days and gardening activities. Please contact the event organisers for further information.

Use the ‘categories’ to select the type of activity and the ‘Tags’ for the specific themes i.e. Friendly Parks for All, a programme of activities for people with dementia and their carers.

Springtime Safari brings you close up to nature. We’re back again this year for another wonderful activity-packed afternoon of creatures, wildlife, pondlife, arts and crafts, and stories for children and families on the Sunday afternoon of the Spring Bank Holiday.

* A mini safari around the woodland trail with creatures you can see close up – follow our special map to meet and learn about fascinating creatures like hedgehogs, bees, beetles and eels

* Visit The Nature Collection, the extraordinary traveling natural history museum with skulls, feathers, bones and curiosities that will amaze you

* Learn to identify beautiful wildflowers

* Wild Education Forest School with outdoor activities

* Meet the local voluntary wildlife organisations that help care for wild animals and plants including Friends of the River Crane Environment, ZSL’s rivers and eels project, Twickenham Beekeepers and Sue Kidger’s Hedgehog Rescue.

* Nature-inspired arts and crafts with Orleans Gallery in the Coach House

* Entertaining and exciting outdoor story times with Richmond Library Service

* Information about how you can get involved with your local green space

There’s lots to see and learn about for children of all ages – and it’s all free!

Talk: ‘Happenings on the Heath’ with FORCE
May 6 @ 10:30 am – 12:00 pm

Hunting, horse racing, military reviews, duels, Kings, soldiers, botanist, extreme pedestrian – it all happened on the Heath ! Come along and join us for a presentation and historical tales of happenings on Hounslow Heath.

This talk is arranged by FORCE with Katy Cox. It is being held in the classroom on the second floor of the Shot Tower in Crane Park, where access is only via stairs. We look forward to seeing you.  The event is free but booking essential as numbers are limited .

Please note that the “Shot Tower” is on the north side of the River Crane accessible by foot from the Hanworth Road (TW4 5NX) in the west and the Great Chertsey Road (TW2 6DF) in the east. Nearest vehicular access is from Ellerman Road (TW2 6AR). There is no direct access to Crane Park Island or the “Shot Tower” from the south bank of the River Crane.

Guided Walk: Birds on the Duke of Northumberland’s River with FORCE
May 20 @ 6:00 am – 7:30 am

Keith Martin will be leading this early morning walk to see the birds in Mereway Nature Park and along the Duke of Northumberland’s River.  Those of you who have joined Keith’s walks will already know the surprising number of  birds resident in the area.  With some luck, Treecreepers, Nuthatches, or Mute Swans will be seen

Please wear suitable outdoor attire for the weather that day and  sturdy footwear for outdoor paths.  This walk is organised by FORCE as part of a series of walks and talks along the Duke of Northumberland’s River and local area.

The event is free but booking is essential

Ham Open Gardens
May 21 @ 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm

Once every two years, Ham’s most exquisite private gardens open their gates to the public for an afternoon. On Sunday 21 May from 1pm to 5pm over 15 gardens will be open – a wonderful opportunity to explore the hidden treasures, which reflect the diversity of the area’s rich history from the 17th century through to the present day.

Ham Open Gardens is organised by the Ham and Petersham Association for keen horticulturalists and for anyone who simply enjoys beautiful gardens. Tickets are £11 each or two for £16.50 (free for under 16s). Want to know more or buy a ticket?  click here!

Hand Annual Charities Fair, Twickenham Green
May 29 @ 10:00 am – 3:00 pm

Hands Care Group organises this fun day out for individuals and families. Join in and support local charities.

The Mayor of Richmond upon Thames is invited to do a walkabout tour of the stalls to meet and greet from 11am onwards.

Over seventy charities and voluntary organisations have stalls around the Green selling a variety of goods including plants, toys, home produce, jams, cakes, craft, jewellery, gifts, books, bric-a-brac, refreshments, barbecue. There will be music, crafts, nature with Friends of the River Crane Environment (FORCE) and more. Click here for more information

Walk/Talk: Wildlife at Mogden with FORCE
Jun 3 @ 10:30 am – 12:00 pm

A visit to Mogden Sewage Treatment Works in Isleworth to learn about the site’s wildlife, including a demonstration of the eel pass and monitoring station. You will be surprised at the range of species and habitats found here, and the work done to ensure they can live alongside a busy operational site. Lydia Blake from Thames Water will be showing around and giving a talk.

The walk is limited to 15 participants. Please wear sturdy, closed toe, footwear and outdoor clothing, and let us know if there are any children in your party.

This walk is organised by FORCE as part of a series of walks and talks along the Duke of Northumberland’s River and local area, in conjunction with Thames Water.

Although the event is free, booking is essential

FILM: A Simpler Way. Green Screen, Ham

A Simpler Way: Crisis as Opportunity is a free feature-length documentary that follows a community in Australia who came together to explore and demonstrate a simpler way to live in response to global crises. Throughout the year the group build tiny houses, plant veggie gardens, practice simple living, and discover the challenges of living in community. The film documents the communities learning process as well as exploring the global issues we’re facing through interviews with some of today’s most interesting speakers on the subjects, including permaculture co-originator David Holmgren, filmmaker and activist Helena Norberg-Hodge, climate change activist David Spratt and many more.

Ham Library Community Space, Sunday 11th June, doors open 5.15pm for a 5.30pm start.
Run-time is 1hr20m. As always, there will be the opportunity for discussion afterwards.
